In Fernie, midweek is the new weekend!
Updated: Jul 30
A popular saying among Fernie locals is they “came for the winter and ended up staying for the summer.”
So much to do in Fernie!
Many amazing summer events and activities have launched over the last few years meaning most locals no longer live for the weekends, they live for every day. If you want to experience the town like a local this summer, then weekdays are where it’s at.
Avoiding the bustle of the weekend crowds ensures your stay in Fernie is more about doing what you want to do and less about trying to avoid everyone else. So, if you’re thinking about coming to Fernie this summer, and want to know what life is like without the weekend crowds, we highly recommend booking yourself a midweek stay to check it out for yourselves.
Mondays Social tennis can be found over at the tennis club in James White park from 5 pm till 8 pm. If you’d prefer something a little more casual, there’s also a frisbee golf course at the James White Park, so a trip over there is well worth a visit. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the secluded little beach at the back of the park. As you’re heading into the park take the right-hand lane and when you get to the parking lot lookout for a leafy footpath leading you to a perfect little paddling spot, its great for younger kids too!
Tuesdays 2Knee Tuesdays offers fun times and new biking friends. Expect enduro-style mountain bike racing for all! Races are scheduled throughout Fernie’s trail network every Tuesday, meeting at 6.45 pm and finishing at The Park Place Lodge for drinks and nachos. You do need to be a Fernie Mountain Bike Club member to enter, but FMBC membership gives you access to other club events and race series as well as supporting the trails you love to ride.
If you happen to be unlucky enough to experience a bout of summer rain, The Vogue Theatre does $8 tickets on Tuesdays.
For something a little different, check out Wildsight’s Forage in the Forest, not a weekly event but certainly a unique one. Expect a fascinating insight into the world of foraged food and medicinal plants led by expert naturalists Lee-Anne Walker or Mary Cosman. The tour kicks off in the provincial park at 5.30 pm
Wednesdays Fernie Women on Wheels meet at a different trailhead each week at 6.30 pm and split the group into ability so you never need feel left behind. There’s supportive guidance for beginners and lots of challenge for more advanced riders. Find out more in the Facebook group.
Soak up the last of the evening sun in a chilled family atmosphere at Fernie’s free Summer Outdoor Concert Series. Expect music from both local and touring bands, alongside tasty food choices, a mountain market and beer garden. Kids love to play in the closed off street, or sit and do arts and crafts whilst adults catch up with friends and enjoy a cold beverage in the beer garden. Be sure to bring ID whatever your age!
Thursdays Thursday night is late-night at the ski hill, which opens up the opportunity for some great evening bike racing in the (slightly) cooler air if that’s your thing, or, simply a way to make the most of your lift pass. The Scott Thursday night downhill race series is open to ages 8 to 40+, you get 1 lap to prove yourself, so make it count! Registration closes at 6.30 pm and the racing starts at 7 pm. After race prizes, drinks and eats can be had at Legends Mountain Eatery. It’s informal and welcoming to all.
If staying on two feet is more your thing, the fortnightly North Face trail running race series is also on at the hill on Thursdays with categories split into male/female under and over 18s. After racing the Cirque Restaurant is open for drinks and prizes.
And for the kids Fernie never leaves out the kids! Of course, kids are welcome at the Wednesday socials and the bike race series are open for older kids too. To channel that creative spark, why not express some artistic flair at the Arts Station on Mondays at Club Cre8, and 5-8-year-olds can expect some great tuition with the Mini Rippers every Friday morning.
Whether you’re looking for a family getaway, a romantic weekend for two, or a weekend with friends we would love to have you at Brooks Creek Ranch.
