Ghost Legends and Halloween in Fernie

The history of Fernie is riddled with natural disasters and unfortunate events which is enough for locals to attribute these events to a curse that hangs over the valley. On the other hand, if you’re looking for some spooky themed fun that won’t give you nightmares, Fernie has just the events and activities for the whole family!
Legend of the Ghostrider
According to legends, on a summer evening the shadow of a horse and rider said to be an angry Chief and his daughter pursuing William Fernie. William was betrothed to the Princess for one purpose: to learn the source of her coal bead necklace. After uncovering the mystery of the necklace, it’s said that William left the Princess. In revenge, the tribe’s medicine woman placed a curse over the region.
4th Annual Great Pumpkin Hunt
Saturday, October 20 enjoy a fun pumpkin hunt at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre. Join the hunt with a $5 donation from 11:00am-1:00pm! (Pumpkins have ran out in the past – so be sure to get there on time!) There will be complimentary hot chocolate and marshmellows and when you bring your own mug you’ll be entered into a draw prize. There will be bon fires as well so bring a hot dog or two to roast on the fire afterward.
Halloween Events in Fernie
Dia del Muertos at the Fernie Heritage Library
This event is a very special way honour and celebrate those who have passed. In collaboration with the Elk Valley Hospice Society, the Fernie Heritage Library is celebrating the Day of the Dead (Dia del Muerte) with stories and activities to honour those loved ones who have passed on. Parts of the movie COCO will be played and participants are asked to bring a photo of someone they love (pets included). This is an event for all ages on Thursday, November 1 from 3:45pm – 5:30pm. Note that waivers are required for children aged 7-12.
Theatrical Ghost Tours at The Arts Station
Get ready to unveil Fernie’s most intriguing – and terrifying – ghost stories. History’s legends will have you wishing you stayed home safe and unaware. Every legend you will hear is a recount of Fernie’s dark history, local legends, or vivid experiences from the region. Tours are 19+ and are presented by Tunnel Theatre for 2 nights only, October 28 and 29. Get ready to unveil Fernie’s most intriguing – and terrifying – ghost stories. Halloween Den of Death at Kodiak Lounge
Fright Night is almost upon you and you won’t want to be alone! The Kodiak Lounge in the Raging Elk Hostel is hosting a ghoulish get together starting at 9pm. Put on your best costume for the chance to win some door prizes and bring your friends along for a frightful night of Halloween fun.
Hogwarts Halloween at the Fernie Heritage Library
Come wise Ravenclaws, brave Gryffindors, loyal Hufflepuffs, and cunning Slytherins! On Halloween Night, Harry Potter fans get the chance to dress in their favourite Halloween costumes and have some fun. This all ages party is hosted at Fernie’s Library and is a free event from 3:30pm-5:00pm. Costumes are encouraged, snacks will be provided, Harry Potter themed games and activities will be out in full force!
